Building a digital marketing strategy from scratch feels overwhelming at first. You’ve got your website, social media, email marketing, and search engine presence all competing for your attention at the same time. That’s a lot of moving pieces.
But here’s the thing. You don’t have to figure it all out at once.
Why Your Digital Marketing Strategy Actually Matters
A lot of small businesses are operating just fine right now without a formal strategy. If that’s you, great. But “just fine” isn’t the ceiling. It’s the floor.
Without a clear digital marketing strategy, you’re leaving potential clients out there with no real path to find you. Maybe they’ll dig through the noise and land on your page. Or maybe they’ll find your competitor first. Strategy is what closes that gap.
A good strategy gives you a blueprint. Something you can build on, adjust, and return to as your business grows. This is part one of a two-part breakdown, and we’re starting with the foundation.
Step 1: Get Noticed
The first piece of any digital marketing strategy is visibility. This isn’t just a new business problem. Established companies need it too.
There’s a principle in marketing called the Rule of 7. The basic idea is that a potential buyer needs to see or hear your message at least seven times before they take action. In today’s social media environment, that number is probably higher.
Think about it like working your way into someone’s peripheral vision before you move into their line of sight. Social media ads are one of the most effective ways to do this. They’re affordable, they’re subtle, and even the ones people scroll past still register.
Search engine visibility matters too. Google regularly offers credits for new advertisers. That’s free reach you’re leaving on the table if you’re not using it.
Keep doing this step even when business picks up. Visibility is never finished.
Step 2: Start a Real Conversation
There’s no selling in this step. None.
This is about building trust through content. Use your blog and social media to engage your audience as actual people. Ask questions. Run a poll. Share something real.
People want to feel heard. The more your content invites a response, the more your audience starts to feel a connection to you. That connection is what moves someone from stranger to client over time.
Step 3: Get Connected and Stay Connected
Now that people know who you are and feel like they’re getting to know you, give them a way to stay in touch.
Use the content you share on social media to collect email addresses. Ask for one when someone visits your site. Then use that list to keep delivering value, not pitches.
Consistent, useful contact builds the kind of trust that makes people choose you when they’re ready to buy.
Step 4: Make a Small Sale First
Okay, now we’re talking about sales. But start small.
Jumping straight to a premium package on someone’s first interaction is like proposing on a first date. It can work, but it usually doesn’t. Worse, it often scares people off for good.
Start with something low-risk. A free consultation, a discounted session, a short intro offer. Let someone experience working with you before they commit to the full investment.
Small sales build confidence. Confident clients make the big sale a lot easier to close.
Step 5: Take Care of the Customer
Once you make the sale, do not disappear.
Follow up. Check in. Ask how things are going. If there’s an issue, fix it fast. The relationship you built to get the sale needs attention after the sale too.
This is how one-time clients become long-term clients. It’s also how referrals happen. People talk about businesses that made them feel like they mattered.
Stay Consistent, Stay on Track
A digital marketing strategy only works if you work all of it. Skipping steps or jumping ahead without building the foundation is how momentum falls apart.
Do all five steps. Do them consistently. The results compound over time.
