How To Manage the DISC Profiles

Have you ever given the same pep talk to two different people on your team and gotten completely opposite reactions? One person walks away fired up and the other looks at you like you’re speaking a foreign language.

That’s not a communication problem. That’s a motivation problem. Different people are wired differently, and if you’re leading a team without understanding that, you’re leaving a lot of performance on the table.

What the DISC Profile for Team Building Actually Is

DISC is a personality framework that breaks down into four types. D stands for Drive, I stands for Influence, S stands for Steadiness, and C stands for Compliance. Most people lead with one or two of these traits, and understanding where each person on your team falls changes how you communicate with them, how you motivate them, and how you build around their strengths.

To give you a simple example, I have two kids. My son is motivated by freedom and autonomy. Give him space to do his thing and he thrives. My daughter is motivated by praise, recognition, and connection. Same household, same parents, completely different wiring. Your team members are no different.

I’m a high D and high I, which means I’m driven and outgoing but genuinely weak in the steadiness and compliance areas. If I built a team entirely out of people like me, it would be a disaster. High energy, high ego, constant competition, and very little follow-through. Variety isn’t just nice to have on a team. It’s essential.

How to Use DISC Profiles to Manage Your Team Better

Understanding the framework is just the starting point. The real value comes from applying it in how you lead each person day to day.

Know your audience. A high S personality values sincerity and personal connection above almost everything else. When you take the time to understand them and communicate in a way that feels genuine, you earn their loyalty. A high D, on the other hand, cares about results and efficiency. The same warm, relationship-focused conversation that lights up an S might feel like a waste of time to a D. Tailor your approach accordingly.

Become a committed listener. This one applies across all four personality types. People want to feel heard before they’re willing to follow. If you’re always the one talking, you’re missing information about what actually motivates the people around you. Ask more questions. Listen more than you speak. You’ll learn things about your team that will make you a dramatically better leader.

Give credit openly and consistently. No one has all the answers, including you. When someone on your team solves a problem or brings an idea that moves things forward, acknowledge it publicly. This is especially powerful for high I personalities who are motivated by recognition, but honestly it matters for everyone. People work harder for leaders who appreciate them.

Finding the Gaps on Your Team

One of the most practical uses of the DISC profile for team building is identifying where you have gaps. If everyone on your team is a high D, you’re probably moving fast but missing detail and follow-through. If everyone is a high S, you’ve got stability but possibly not enough drive to push through hard challenges.

Look at your current team and honestly assess which profiles are well represented and which are missing. That gap is usually the first place to look when things are consistently breaking down.

If you want to explore this further, there are free DISC assessments available online that can give you and your team a starting point. The investment of an hour to understand how your people are wired will pay back many times over in reduced friction and stronger performance.

Their success is your success. The more intentional you are about understanding the people you lead, the better the outcomes for everyone.
