If you’re considering the switch from traditional marketing to digital marketing, you need to know the pros and cons.

Traditional marketing methods have almost been ingrained into the general business psyche. It usually includes leaflets, posters, billboards, business cards, TV, radio, etc. While these methods are still useful, they’re nowhere near as valuable as modern digital marketing methods.

Digital marketing involves a variety of tools. Common digital marketing tools are email, social media, search engine advertising, SEO-optimized blogs, marketing funnels, and more.

So what are the benefits of switching to digital marketing? In this article, I’m going to go through 5 reasons why digital marketing is a much better investment than traditional marketing.

#1 Measurability

Digital marketing campaigns are way easier to track than traditional marketing campaigns. Let’s take a simple Facebook ad campaign vs. a newspaper ad.

A newspaper ad could be printed in 50,000 newspapers and delivered to the same number of homes. However, there’s no real way you can target specific customers. Nor can you track the engagement of this ad or how successful it’s been. Who liked the ad more (demographics)? How did people respond to the ad (take action)? What was your ROI (return on investment) for that specific ad? It’s like a guessing game.

While you may see more people come to your business, you have no idea who these people are. What do they like? Did they even see your ad?

Whereas, the Facebook ad will enable you to target specific audiences based on their likes, wants, behaviors, location, income bracket, and more. You can also track how audiences responded to the ad, what actions they took, whether they liked it, plus your return on investment.

Digital marketing lets you track so many variables that you’ll be able to develop a targeted ad that gets much better results. All this for a fraction of the price of a traditional newspaper ad campaign.

#2 Advanced targeting

With all of the variables than you can track with digital marketing, you can create adverts and campaigns targeted to particular groups of people who are more likely to interact, engage, and take action with your ads.

Whereas targeting with traditional marketing campaigns is more ambiguous, digital marketing campaigns will give you almost everything you need to know — including advanced demographic and psychographics, enabling you to build accurate ideal customer profiles.

#3 More cost-effective

Digital marketing is far cheaper than traditional marketing methods. Not only that, but you’ll also get more return on your investment. For example, the cost of a Facebook ad (targeted at 100,000 people) is a fraction of the cost of a newspaper ad target of 100,000 readers.

I once worked with a restaurant that paid around $300 a week for a reasonably small ad in a local newspaper — using a coupon code to track results. Once I told them about Facebook marketing, they tripled their results, paying just $30 on a well-targeted Facebook campaign.

You can also spend little to no money using digital, just by posting content on your social channels and website blog.

#4 Faster results

Traditional marketing campaigns can take weeks before you start seeing results. In comparison, you can start a digital marketing campaign and get results within seconds. Using the example of a Facebook ad, you’ll instantly see how many people have viewed your ad, how they’ve interacted with it, and if they’ve taken action to buy your products and services.

Getting fast results is so crucial in today’s world. It’s much better to use digital marketing, so you’re able to keep up with changing consumer trends and inform your marketing strategies to get the best return on your marketing dollars.

Making the Switch to Digital Marketing

At first, it may not be easy to fully understand how digital marketing can be valuable to your business. But digital is essential in today’s world — not just for convenience, but also as a cost-effective way to keep up with your competition and changing consumer trends.
