The decade has changed. This is the perfect time for you to assess all that you’ve achieved. Not just last year, but over the last 10 years.  Like most people, you’ll likely have had many ups and downs, both in your personal life and while on your entrepreneurial journey. What areas of self-improvement should you focus on?

Now’s the time to take stock of everything you’ve experienced. That’s both the positives and negatives. Focus on channeling these experiences to make 2020 and the next decade the best years possible. 

In this article, we’re going to go over 3 things you should definitely include in the 2020 self-improvement checklist.  These will help you in both your personal life and entrepreneurial journey. 


#1 Managing Your Stress

Stress management is crucial.  As your business grows, you’ll need to find ways that enable you to manage small, medium, and large stressors. Such as hiring the right staff, meeting quarterly targets, and scaling your business.

One of the best ways to manage stress is meditation. Although the recommendation of meditation seems to have become overused, it shouldn’t be shrugged off. The benefits of meditation are enormous, including reducing anxiety, boosting your focus, reducing stress levels, and improving both your mental and physical health. In short, mediation will help you cope better with stressful situations and improve your life. 

Other ways to manage your stress include breathing exercises (which can also be tied in with meditation), taking time away from technology (your computer screen and cellphone), hiring an assistant to reduce your workload, and using adaptogenic herbs.


#2 Optimizing Your Time

Life gets busy. After reflecting on the last decade, you may have realized that you wasted a lot of time unnecessarily. Your work-life balance may be non-existent. Time is precious, and this is why it’s essential that you assess how you’ll be spending your time during the next decade. 

There are a few different time management techniques, including the Pomodoro Technique (segmenting your time in 25-minute slots with a 5 minute break in between), and reducing distractions by using a website and app blocker. My personal favorite technique that saves me a massive amount of time is known as “Eating The Frog” — otherwise known as tackling the most significant task on your list first. When starting your day, think of the biggest thing that you need to accomplish and make that your priority. Once accomplished, you can move on to the small tasks on your list. 

“Eating The Frog” helps you remove the thought of having to complete a considerable task — which can drag you down and affect your energy.

Time management is also vital for your personal lifespending time with family and friends is extremely important for you. Always ensure you’re scheduling downtime to spend with friends and family. Using apps such as TimeTree is a great way to ensure you are booking time away from work every week.


#3 Read Every Day

Reading a book every day is one of the best and fastest ways to improve yourself. Aside from greatly expanding your knowledge, reading is known for numerous benefits, including improving memory, your ability to focus, and your creative thinking. There are hundreds of amazing self-improvement books available. Some of the best include Napoleon Hill’s Think & Grow Rich, Dale Carnegie’s How To Win Friends & Influence People, and Jeff Olson’s The Slight Edge. 

If you’re like me, you’ll sometimes be running short on time to read. My answer to this is to try audiobooks. They’re by far my favorite way to consume information without having to read. There are many audiobook services available, including Amazon’s Audible. Play the audiobooks through your car stereo on your commute to the office, during your break, or when winding down in the evening.

Make reading at least a chapter of a book every day one of your self-improvement goals for 2020, and watch how it will massively improve your life overall.
