It’s a new year, a time for reflection and a new resolution. For many small business owners, the new year is a time to take a look at your business and evaluate what happened in 2019. Then examine what you would like to happen in 2020. It’s only natural to take a small amount of time for self-reflection. But during this time of self-reflection be careful that you don’t miss out on the one resolution that every small business owner should make. That resolution is spending more time with your loved ones.

Now before you start arguing that there’s simply not enough hours in the day for that, consider the following.

This Resolution Relieves Stress

According to an article published in Psychology Today, “…because the link between human contact and stress relief is so primal, it’s not surprising that supportive friends and family have so many health benefits. As we grow up, we learn to connect other social contacts with stress relief, generalizing from our early experience and learning to take pleasure in being in touch.”

The article cites a study that looked at dozens of previous studies to gather its information. The ultimate conclusion, humans are wired to see human contact as stress relief. When we spend time with supportive friends and family, there’s a lot of benefits.

Family Time Leads to a Longer, Healthier Life

An article posted online by Harvard Medical School plays off this idea. According to the article, “Dozens of studies have shown that people who have satisfying relationships with family, friends, and their community are happier, have fewer health problems, and live longer. Conversely, a relative lack of social ties is associated with depression and later-life cognitive decline, as well as with increased mortality.”

In other words, spending time with your family and friends won’t just help you relieve your stress and relax a little, it will also help you down the road.

Family Time Helps Prepare Your Kids for the Future

It’s tempting to think that you’re doing all this work for your kids, so it’s understandable that you’re spending time away from them, but multiple studies have shown that the best way to set your kids up for the future is to spend time with them.

According to the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, “Parents’ actions influence the way children feel about themselves. When a parent holds a child, the child can feel how important he or she is. Parents who can’t be with their kids on a daily basis can call them, write them notes or send e-mails.”

Whether it’s in person, over the phone or via a simple note or email, make sure you make at least one point of contact with your child every day.
